Algeria-Iran: Convergence of views on supporting just cause

ALGIERS- Algeria and Iran affirmed, on Sunday, their convergence of views on various regional and international issues, especially on supporting just causes worldwide, chiefly the Palestinian cause, in addition to maintaining international peace and stability.
In this regard, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said in a joint press statement, following his talks with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raissi, who is on an official visit to Algeria, that this meeting was “an opportunity to go over the latest developments in the Sahel and to address the issue of Western Sahara.”
The President of the Republic commended “the convergence of views and the agreement on keeping up the efforts for maintaining peace and security regionally and internationally.”
The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, noted that he had “a long and in-depth discussion” with his Iranian counterpart on “the exceptional circumstances” in the current regional and international climate, particularly the Zionist aggression and crimes perpetrated in Gaza.,”
He further applauded “the positions of the Iranian leadership, backing the Palestinian people and rejecting the Zionist aggression amid the shameful silence of some countries”.
President Tebboune said that he and his Iranian counterpart are in lockstep to bolster coordination and consultation on the Palestinian issue, reaffirming “the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent State within the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds as its capital.”
“We have taken note with interest of the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the lawsuit filed by South Africa concerning the genocide committed in Gaza by the Zionists,” pointed out the President of the Republic, stressing that he has “instructed Algeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) to request an urgent meeting on this issue, which was held, and other meetings will take place at Algeria’s request.”
After hailing Iran’s stance supporting Algeria’s accession to the UN Security Council, President Tebboune reaffirmed that Algeria “will work unremittingly to back the just causes worldwide and reduce the conflicts threatening the stability of countries and the peace of peoples.”
Recalling that Algeria and Iran have “long-standing relations based on sincere ties and close cooperation,” he said that the leaders of the two countries are “making continuous efforts to boost the fraternal relations.”
“Today’s meeting is a key step during which we discussed the bilateral relations in general and examined ways to bolster them,” indicated the President of the Republic, reaffirming on this occasion “his resolve to make serious efforts to raise these relations to a level that mirrors the common political willingness of the two countries.”
He also expressed his thanks to the Iranian President for his participation in the 7th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), which was, he continued, “a success thanks to Algeria’s friends and brothers, including Iran.”
For his part, the Iranian President affirmed the convergence of the two countries’ positions regarding “the war crimes and genocide committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people, as well as its relentless killing of children and women and destroying homes.”
In this regard, he commended the positions of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in defending the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people.
The Iranian President also praised Algeria’s stances at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and its advocacy for this just cause, in addition to its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, which he said is “a positive approach enshrined by President Tebboune.”
The Iranian President further commended the “perfect and excellent” organization of the 7th GECF Summit, extending his congratulations to the President of the Republic for the success of this global event.
Regarding the bilateral relations he characterized as “historical and deeply rooted,” the Iranian President indicated that he discussed with the President Tebboune ways and means to strengthen these relations, affirming that his visit to Algeria is “successful,” due to the outcomes achieved so as to promote bilateral cooperation in all fields, particularly in economy.
The two countries inked several cooperation agreements and Memoranda of Understanding in different sectors, including energy, the knowledge economy and start-ups, tourism and crafts, communication and sports.
